Safety, Performances and Airport Departement (#3) -
Controllers - Systems Interface Division

The current activities of the Controller-System Interface Division (ICS) are based on working position of air traffic controllers who work in the approach room and in the tower cab.

The studies aim at developping the Controller-System interface in order to meet the new requirements of the airports which have the most workload (Roissy, Orly but also of the big Approach centres which are located outside Paris area) and especially :

This field of activity is being studied since October1998. We take advantage of the experience gained from the development of the PHIDIAS-ODS/FRANCE project to the benefit of EN-ROUTE centres controllers, in the scope of the definition of a controller working position a of validation. The study of this field is carried out in close collaboration with several divisions among which ATT and TCC.

The following diagram explains the role of the divisions as well as the existing collaborations.

The studies in progress are collected within the framework of TAMATA project.

The ICS division also carries out studies of a general nature such as the study of the current use of the vocal medium between pilot and controller in the project VOCALISE.

The previous works

As far as Approach control is concerned, a study which aims at assessing input and designation means has been carried out in 1999.

The previous works of the division have been of help in defining the PHIDIAS-ODS FRANCE system specifications undertaken and managed by STNA. Several projects involving demonstators of the working position have been carried, among them, the demonstrator HEGIAS. The division also took part from 1995 to 1998 in the European project PHARE and in particular in PHARE DEMONSTRATION 3

Studies on specific aspects of the controller working position :

  • programme of specific experimentations for controller-system interfaces FLASH
  • study on the range of colours
  • tools pertaining to the working position interface : a card editorNECTAR
  • European project: SWIFT
  • voice recognition: PAROLE

The air traffic controllers' training pertaining to ODS-France through the project SPECTACLE. This project didn't come to an end as result of the ODS programme reorganization.
